On August 28, the UAE proudly celebrates Emirati Women’s Day as a tribute to the resilience, achievements, and unique cultural, social, and economic journeys of Emirati women. Established in 2015 by Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, the mother of the nation, this occasion commemorates the founding of the General Women’s Union (GWU) in 1975.

Over the years, Emirati women have become pioneers across fields, from Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak’s lifelong efforts to empower women, to Sheikha Latifa bint Mohammed Al Maktoum’s leadership in arts and culture, Amna Al Qubaisi’s breaking barriers in motorsports, and Noura Al Matrooshi’s historic journey as the first Emirati woman astronaut. Their achievements continue to inspire progress and shape the nation’s future.

Emirati Women’s Day, in essence, serves as a powerful reminder of the UAE’s ongoing commitment to empowering and supporting Emirati women across all sectors.

A Celebration of Togetherness and Progression

This year’s theme for the Emirati Women’s Day is ‘Hand in Hand, We Celebrate 50 Years,’ marking a major milestone: the 50th anniversary of the GWU. It emphasises the values of unity, collaboration, and shared responsibility while honouring women’s efforts, devotion, dreams, and accomplishments over the past 50 years, as well as their ambitions for the future.

The theme is also aligned with the Year of Community, declared by His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the President, reinforcing the UAE’s vision of strengthening national cohesion and reaffirming the essential role of Emirati women as integral partners in the nation’s development and progress.

Ultimately, it serves as a powerful reminder that the greatest national achievements are achieved through unity and collective effort.

Horse rides, snow games, and an Iftar under the stars

It was a long journey—sixteen hours by bus and two more on horseback, all while fasting. At last, my family and I reached the breathtaking snow-blanketed peaks, located in the Swat Valley in Northern Pakistan. As we reached the summit, without any doubt we could say that the picturesque landscape made every moment of the journey worthwhile.

Once at the top, we quickly set up our Iftar spot. All the adults huddled close to the fire, chatting, laughing, playing card games, and soaking in the view. While children built snowmen, engaged in snow fights, and played hide and seek.

As the sun began to set, we laid out the dastarkhwan, a beautiful spread of delicacies including Bihari kebabs, Mutton Roast, and Dhunba. We offered prayers, broke our fast, and shared stories as the stars sparkled above us.

It has been three years since this Iftar, but it feels like yesterday. More than the food or the journey, it was the bond we shared and experienced that was unforgettable.

A memorable Iftar gathering

My friends and I had always planned on spending a special Iftar at the Meydan Hotel, located in the heart of the city with exhilarating views of the Dubai skyline and racecourses. Last Ramadan, this plan finally came to life.

The atmosphere was beautiful, with warm lights, rich aroma of freshly cooked dishes, and a delicious buffet, which included everything from lamb Ouzi and lentil soup to Kunafa and Baklava.

We found a spot near a large glass window, overlooking the stunning view of the city. After saying our prayers, we broke our fast while laughing and capturing the moment with photos.

That was not even the best part. It was also my birthday, but I thought my friends had forgotten it since Ramadan is a busy time. To my surprise, my friends presented a very thoughtful birthday gift, leaving me speechless. More than the good food and the fascinating view, it was their kindness and thoughtfulness that made my day.

As we left, we promised to make this an annual tradition. No doubt, it was a night to remember!

Rhythms of joy and togetherness in Ramadan

Back home, in Sudan, during Ramadan, the youth play a vital role in waking up the community for Suhoor. With drumbeats and lively songs, they create a rhythmic call that fills the streets and gives us the energy to rise. This tradition brings everyone together for the pre-dawn meal.

As the day unfolds and the sun sets, a quiet stillness surrounds us, followed by the synchronized Azans from the mosques signaling Iftar. The aroma of Sudanese cuisine with food items like Aseeds, Shorba, Tamia, Sambosa, and Basbousa fills the air.

In our neighbourhood, it is an age-old tradition for men to gather in the streets to break their fast and for women to take turns hosting Iftar at each other’s homes. As we come together, we share meals, laughter, and stories, that bring Ramadan close to our hearts, creating a deep sense of community and togetherness.

A journey of a lifetime: Umrah during Ramadan

Performing Umrah during Ramadan had always been a dream and in 2024, that dream became a reality. As we set foot in Makkah for the last Ashra, an overwhelming sense of peace embraced us. The sight of the Kaaba, illuminated under the night sky, filled our hearts with gratitude. Every moment of worship felt deeply spiritual, and the nights spent in Qiyam were beyond description.

The morning of Eid was surreal. Standing before the Kaaba, surrounded by thousands of believers, we offered Eid prayers with teary eyes and hearts full of joy. The echoes of Takbeer reminded us of the beauty of faith.

After Eid, we embarked on our journey to Madina, the city of our beloved Prophet (PBUH). As we entered the serene streets of Madina, we were embraced by a sense of tranquillity. Sitting before the Rawdah, sending Salams, and absorbing the peaceful aura of the city was a feeling we will cherish forever.

This Umrah was not just a journey; It was a transformation of our souls. The memories of this Ramadan in Makkah and Madina will always remain in our hearts, inspiring us for a lifetime.

An Iftar to remember by the seashore

Officer, Health Operations

For nearly 30 years, a tradition has brought young people in our community together to host a special Iftar for everyone. Each year, they plan an Iftar by the seashore, where we are fortunate enough to reside.

As Iftar approaches, these youngsters visit each house, collecting food from each family. Everyone then gathered by the beachside, where an elaborate spread and decorations awaited us.

After our prayers, the elders shared words of wisdom, after which we would break our fast together with lively conversations, laughter, and the calming sea breeze.

It has been three years since I last experienced this beloved tradition. But its warmth continues to be with me.

As we celebrate Ramadan, these stories from our people remind us of the significance of the families, faith, tradition, and culture. Let us all continue to fill our hearts with gratitude, compassion, and renewed optimism this Ramadan and beyond.
